Directors' Statement
Reporting the stories of struggle, pain and bravery
The Jungle Book is a project we’ve been working on since 2016; it stemmed from the migrant crisis that took place over the course of 2015 and 2016, with its effects continuing now. We were receiving vague, contradictory information about the refugee crisis and the so-called Jungle the refugees set up in Calais, we took a first trip there, to gain a first-hand idea of the situation and understand how best to help. Once news of a potential clearing of the Jungle broke, documenting its reality became a necessity.
We went back to Calais, camera in tow, and began recording encounters and conversations. We spoke to refugees as well as volunteers and paramedics, trying to collect as many stories and points of view as possible. The Jungle Book is therefore to be seen as a way to preserve the memory of the Calais jungle, a documentary that stands as an archival piece as well as an attempt to find some answers.
